The Monday night session in McCarthy's has been running for nearly 5 years and is comprised largely of musicians who live in the area. It is not a "hot" session as such in that many of the players are recent to the world of Irish Traditional Music but the session still follows the conventions that hold true for all sessions worldwide. One of the important things to remember is that it's not a learning session, neither is it a slow session. Plenty of tunes get played that most people know however occasionally a tune will get played that many will not know. It's highly recommended that musicians not play tunes they don't know. Knowing a tune means that you can play the piece from start to finish at a good pace tunefully and in time. It can be difficult for musicians to play music with those who are trying but do not know the tune. The practise of "trying to play along" to tunes that a player may not know can lead to the demise of the session as the more experienced players lose interest because of this.
